NAACP Seeks Changes Following Death Of Derek Williams

Posted on

As previously reported on this website, Derek Williams died in Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) custody in July 2011. In light of this tragedy, the Milwaukee Branch of the NAACP is calling for changes to protect civil rights.

To begin with, the NAACP recommends improvements to the Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission (FPC), the entity charged with oversight of the MPD. In addition, the NAACP is proposing that the City of Milwaukee Equal Rights Commission address complaints of discrimination and civil rights violations. The NAACP also urges the County of Milwaukee to re-establish its Human Rights Commission and the State of Wisconsin to create an Office of Human Rights.
