Train Car Strikes Bridge Overpass

Posted on

On Monday morning, March 24, 2014, a Union Pacific train car struck the 35thStreet bridge overpass in Milwaukee. According to a Union Pacific spokesperson, a “double stack” train car carrying large equipment struck three high beams on the overpass, causing damage. Fortunately, no one was injured in the accident. Although the City of Milwaukee Department of Public Works is inspecting the overpass, all rail operations are proceeding. Some southbound lanes of 35thStreet had to be closed as a result of the accident.

The Milwaukee automobile accident lawyers of Samster, Konkel & Safran want to prevent vehicle accidents. While vehicle accidents at railroad crossings have been decreasing since the 1970’s, there are still thousands of accidents at railroad crossings every year. We encourage drivers to follow these safety tips for railroad crossings:

  • Trains do not run on schedules, so always maintain proper lookout for trains;
  • Always yield the right-of-way to a train;
  • Obey all warning signals and lights;
  • Trains are traveling faster than you realize;
  • Before crossing tracks, make sure there is room to get completely across; and
  • Never try to outrun an approaching train.
