On February 20, 2011, an 18-year-old Massachusetts man was sending and receiving text messages while he was driving. Because he was distracted by the text messages, his vehicle crossed the center line and collided with a truck traveling the opposite direction. The 55-year-old driver of the truck died as a result of the head-on collision. The texting driver was charged and convicted of motor vehicle homicide and negligent operation of a motor vehicle causing serious injury while texting, and was sentenced to one year in jail.
This tragic story reminds us that texting while driving is an extremely dangerous example of distracted driving, because it takes the driver's hands off the steering wheel, the driver's eyes of the road, and the driver's mind off the task of driving. Studies show that texting and driving may even be more dangerous than drinking and driving. Drivers who cause accidents due to texting now face both civil and criminal liability.
