Four City of Milwaukee Alderpersons issued a statement on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 requesting more public input into the selection of the Commissioners who serve on the City’s Fire and Police Commission (“FPC”). The statement, issued by Alderpersons Milele Coggs, Nik Kovak, Ashanti Hamilton and Jose Perez, reads in part, “we will not support any commission candidate who does not go through a public vetting process.” Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett has already selected the candidates to fill two vacancies on the FPC. The Milwaukee Common Council must then approve the candidates. For more on the recent turmoil at the FPC, please see the civil rights case article in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
The civil rights attorneys of Samster, Konkel & Safran, S.C. believe that changes are needed for the FPC. Back in 2006, the Police Assessment Report Center (“PARC”) issued a report recommending that an Independent Monitor be appointed to oversee the FPC. To read the complete report, please see the PARC website.
