Chief Ed Flynn ordered dozens of officers and civilians who work for the Milwaukee Police Department ("MPD") to attend two days of training on FBI crime reporting standards. The training order follows an investigation by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel which discovered that the MPD misreported hundreds of violent crimes as minor offenses, which were then not counted in Milwaukee's violent crime rate. An internal review by the MPD revealed that thousands of crimes have been misreported. The MPD has blamed human and computer error for the misreporting. The new crime reporting training will occur at Wisconsin State Fair Park on August 22 and 23.
Samster, Konkel & Safran, S.C. Milwaukee personal injury lawyers commends the MPD for providing new training on crime reporting. We remain concerned, however, with Chief Flynn's angry response to the Journal Sentinel investigation, and we believe that there should be an independent review of the MPD's policies and practices.
