Questions Raised Over Firm Picked To Audit The Milwaukee Police Department

Posted on

Back in May 2012, an investigation conducted by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel revealed that the Milwaukee Police Department (“MPD”) has been misreporting crime data, classifying violent crimes as simple assaults. The Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission (“FPC”) has agreed to conduct an audit of the MPD’s crime reporting practices.

Critics are now questioning the FPC’s choice to conduct the audit, a Florida-based company called PRI Management Group, because PRI has made statements in support of MPD Chief Ed Flynn and critical of the Journal Sentinel investigation. For example, PRI founder Edward Laughton posted a video of a Chief Flynn press conference on his blog, along with the comment “Chief Flynn hits it out of the park.”

Milwaukee Aldermen Bob Donovan, Jim Bohl and Michael Murphy doubt whether PRI can conduct an impartial audit of the MPD.

“If the Fire and Police Commission signs a contract with this firm and an audit is done, the question will be is it a legitimate, fair and objective report.” Alderman Murphy said.

The Milwaukee police misconduct lawyers of Samster, Konkel & Safran are also concerned whether PRI can conduct an impartial audit of the MPD. We have reported the progress of the investigation into the MPD’s crime reporting system in website articles that you can find hundreds off assault cases not reported, misreported crimes against officers, Milwaukee police department changing computer codes, and new training on Milwaukee Police crime reporting. We will continue to monitor the investigation as it progresses.
