For the first time in the history of the City of Milwaukee, citizens will have a say on a nominee for the City’s Fire and Police Commission (“FPC”). Mayor Tom Barrett has nominated Ann Wilson to fill a vacancy on the FPC. On Thursday, January 24, 2013, at 1 P.M., the Milwaukee Common Council’s Public Safety Committee will convene to consider the nomination. During the meeting, citizens may comment or submit questions. Citizens who wish to speak during the hearing must register with the committee clerk. In addition to the nomination of Ms. Wilson, the committee will discuss the current status of the FPC. The committee meeting will be broadcast on Time Warner Channel 25 and on AT&T U-Verse Channel 99. The meeting will also be streamed live on the internet. Read more about the committee meeting in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel website.

The decision to allow citizens to comment on the FPC nominee follows recent high profile incidents involving the Milwaukee Police Department (“MPD”), including the death of Derek Williams in MPD custody and allegations of illegal searches conducted by MPD officers.
The civil rights lawyers of Samster, Konkel & Safran, S.C. represent the three young children of Derek Williams, and several victims of the allegedly illegal searches. We hope that the FPC utilizes its powers to hold MPD officers accountable for misconduct.
